Hon. Sadiq Abbas Tafida, the member representing Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency of Taraba State, has been appointed Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Peace Building and National Cohesion.

The appointment is widely regarded as a strategic decision to leverage Hon. Tafida’s grassroots connection, legislative experience, and strong commitment to national unity—especially at a time when Nigeria is confronting challenges related to ethnic tensions, insecurity, and political polarization.

The Committee on Peace Building and National Cohesion plays a pivotal role in the House’s efforts to promote dialogue, prevent conflict, and formulate policies that enhance national integration.

As chairman, Hon. Tafida will be responsible for spearheading legislative initiatives and supporting government policies that aim to bridge Nigeria’s ethnic, religious, and regional divides. He will work closely with traditional rulers, community leaders, and civil society organizations to mediate disputes and promote peaceful coexistence across the country.

Other key responsibilities include monitoring the activities of peace-promoting institutions such as the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR), the National Orientation Agency (NOA), and other relevant departments under the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs. The committee will also sponsor and review bills and motions focused on national integration, reconciliation, and inclusive governance.

Additionally, the committee will help establish grassroots mechanisms for identifying and de-escalating potential conflicts, while fostering partnerships with international organizations and development partners involved in peacebuilding, human security, and conflict resolution.

Speaking shortly after his appointment, Hon. Tafida expressed gratitude to the leadership of the House of Representatives for the trust placed in him. He pledged to collaborate with all stakeholders to effectively fulfill the committee’s mandate.

“This is a national assignment, not just a political responsibility,” he said. “We must build bridges across divides, heal wounds where they exist, and usher in a new era of understanding and mutual respect. I am fully committed to using this platform to advocate for peace, justice, and sustainable coexistence.”

The announcement of his appointment has been met with widespread celebration in Taraba State, particularly within the Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency. Many of his constituents describe him as a humble and principled leader, known for his sense of justice and fairness.

With this new national responsibility, Hon. Tafida is expected to bring fresh energy and insight to legislative efforts aimed at uniting Nigeria’s diverse population and fostering lasting peace across the country.
