African Industries Limited to Partner with Taraba State on Metal Scrap Recycling

Hon. Bernard Shonzen James

As part of the Government commitment  to advance sustainable waste management and promote industrial development, the Taraba State Government is set to partner with African Industries Limited  a company renowned for its expertise in steel and metal recycling  to initiate a large-scale recycling program for metal scraps in the state.

The delegation from African Industries Limited, led by company representative Mr. Salisu Mohammed, arrived in Jalingo, the state capital, on a fact-finding mission to assess the volume, types, and distribution of scrap metals across the city.

Speaking to journalists during the visit, Mr. Salisu Mohammed stated that the company’s visit to Taraba follows successful partnerships with other states such as Kano and Rivers, where metal scrap recycling initiatives have yielded environmental and economic benefits.

“Our visit here is to understand the scope of scrap metal availability and to explore ways in which we can work with the state to recycle these materials. Beyond environmental sanitation, this project will convert waste into valuable industrial products such as iron rods and other construction-grade metals,” he said.

He further emphasized that the initiative is part of the company’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development, noting that the recycling of metal waste not only helps clean up the environment but also supports infrastructure growth by providing recycled materials for the construction industry.

The Taraba State Commissioner for Waste Management, Hon. Shonzen Bernard, who received the team, expressed optimism about the prospects of the partnership. He said Governor Agbu Kefas has continued to take deliberate steps to reposition waste management in the state, and the collaboration with African Industries Limited is another testament to that commitment.

“What we are seeing is the practical demonstration of Governor Kefas’s vision to turn waste into wealth. This initiative will not only generate revenue for the state but also eliminate hazardous metal scraps that pose a threat to our environment,” the Commissioner said.

He explained that the state government is already implementing reforms aimed at modernizing waste management systems, and the partnership with a reputable industry player like African Industries Limited would further accelerate those efforts.

As part of the visit, officials from the Ministry of Waste Management conducted the African Industries team on an extensive tour of major scrap dumping sites within Jalingo, including areas where abandoned vehicles and metallic waste have accumulated over time. The team also visited government ministries and public facilities with derelict assets that can be recovered, processed, and recycled into useful products.
