Governor of Taraba State, Dr Agbu Kefas, on Wednesday unveiled Taraba Seed Production Limited in Lau Local Government Area as part of efforts to enhance agricultural productivity and strengthen food security in the state.
The seed company is designed to produce high-quality hybrid seedlings for farmers and is expected to improve access to certified, climate-resilient seeds while strengthening the agricultural value chain at both state and national levels.
Speaking at the unveiling, Governor Kefas said the initiative aligns with his administration’s commitment to driving sustainable socio-economic development through agriculture. He noted that improved seed availability remains critical to increasing crop yields and ensuring food sufficiency.
The governor also disclosed plans by his administration to construct the road linking Lau to other parts of the state, describing the project as a strategic step towards opening up the area for economic activities and improving access for farmers and investors.
Governor Kefas urged residents of the host communities to take ownership of the project by supporting and protecting it to guarantee its long-term sustainability.
He further encouraged eligible residents to participate in the ongoing APC e-registration exercise to enable them benefit from government development programmes.
He charged the management of Taraba Seed Production Limited to carry host communities along in its operations and ensure inclusive participation in the project.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Prof Nicholas Namessan, said the company would play a key role in advancing agricultural development in the state, noting that its activities would extend beyond seed production.
Representatives of the company explained that the project would focus on the multiplication, processing and distribution of improved seed varieties to farmers across the state.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Lau Local Government Area, Hon. Julius Peter, commended Governor Kefas for his developmental initiatives in the area and called on residents to continue supporting the state government’s programmes.
