by Hamza Shettima

‎The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps,NYSC, Brigadier General O. O Nafiu, has paid a working visit to Taraba State, marking his second official trip to the state since May 2025.

‎During the visit, the DG inspected the NYSC orientation camp and its facilities, including hostels and other infrastructure put in place for corps members. Although corps members were not in camp at the time of the visit, he assessed the condition of the premises and expressed satisfaction with efforts made to maintain the facilities.

‎He also appreciated heads of security agencies in the state for their role in ensuring that corps members reside and serve in a safe and secure environment without fear.

‎The Director-General extended his condolences to the Taraba State NYSC family over the loss of a staff member, Mr. Orunta Ugochuchuwu who passed away barely two months ago. A minute of silence was observed in honour of the deceased and other corps members who lost their lives in the course of national service.

‎Addressing corps members, the DG commended them for adapting to the culture and traditions of their host communities. He described the ability of young Nigerians to blend seamlessly into different cultural settings as a true reflection of national unity and strength.

‎He recalled that the NYSC scheme was introduced in 1973 by former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, noting that the initiative has since opened up numerous opportunities for Nigerian youths. According to him, many former corps members who served outside their states of origin eventually settled in their places of service through employment, marriage, and business ventures.

‎The DG advised corps members to practice prudent financial management, especially in managing their monthly allowances. He encouraged them to cultivate a strong savings culture and to remain proud ambassadors of the NYSC scheme.

‎He further challenged them to take the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) training seriously, emphasizing that job opportunities are increasingly scarce and that entrepreneurial skills can provide alternative means of livelihood.

‎Describing corps members as the future of Nigeria, the Director-General urged them to conduct themselves responsibly and contribute meaningfully to national development.
