It was an emotional and historic gathering in Jalingo, Taraba State, as the United Methodist Church in Nigeria (UMCN) held a grand reconciliation and thanksgiving service at the Jatutu Memorial Cathedral in Magami, exactly ten years after the church was sealed.
The reopening of the over 35-year-old cathedral marks what church leaders described as the end of a prolonged period of division and the beginning of a new chapter of unity and restoration.
The service attracted a large congregation, including church leaders, political office holders, and international delegates from Senegal, Cameroon, and Côte d’Ivoire.
Among dignitaries present were the Residential Bishop of the Nigeria Episcopal Area, Ande I. Emmanuel; Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas; Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, Kizito Bonzena; Danladi Baido; and other key stakeholders.
Speaking during the service, Bishop Ande described the reopening as a divine intervention, attributing the restoration process to the efforts of Governor Kefas, whom he said played a critical role in reuniting the congregation.
Church leadership declared that the UMCN now stands as one united body, affirming that previous factions and divisions have been resolved. The church also announced plans to elect a new bishop between December 3rd and 7th in Monrovia, Liberia.
Delivering the sermon titled “Deliverance from Toxic Relationships,” Governor Kefas emphasised reconciliation and unity, preaching from John 17:21. He noted that disagreements are inevitable but must be managed in a way that preserves relationships and strengthens the Christian faith.
The governor described the occasion as a season of healing, restoration, and renewed commitment to service. He urged members to protect the unity achieved and ensure that past divisions do not resurface.
In his goodwill message, Bishop Ande thanked the state government for facilitating the reopening of the cathedral and assured members that the church would continue to promote peace and unity while maintaining its doctrinal independence.
The reconciliation service ended with prayers, thanksgiving, and renewed hope among worshippers, signalling what many believe is a fresh start for the United Methodist Church in Taraba State.
